Maybe a euphemistic refashioning of pokker, from Middle Low German pocke, from Proto-Germanic *pukkaz, *pukkǭ (pock; swelling), cognate with English pock, pox, German Pocke. Alternatively from kopper, the plural of kop (cup) (from the cups used for blood-letting).
