editEquivalent to fange (“to capture”) + -sel (“act of”). From Old Danish fengelse (“prison”), borrowed from Middle Low German vangnisse, vengnisse, cf. German Gefängnis. Icelandic fangelsi and Swedish fängelse are also borrowed from Low German.
