From Javanese bupati (ꦧꦸꦥꦠꦶ), from Old Javanese bhūpati (king), from Sanskrit भूपति (bhūpati) < भूमिपति (bhūmipati), compound of भूमि (bhūmi, land) +‎ पति (pati, lord). Cognate of Balinese ᬪᬹᬧᬢᬶ (bupati).
