Etymology 1

edit

Disputed, possibilities include:

  1. Akin to Slovene cula (bundle), Hungarian cula (bundle).[1]
  2. A variant of the often synonymous crule, cërrule, itself akin to Serbo-Croatian crȅvljaцре̏вља (shoe), Bulgarian цървул (cǎrvul, type of shoe).[2]
  3. Borrowed from Greek τσόλι (tsóli), τσούλι (tsoúli, rag).

There may be a conflation of multiple sources.
