From Proto-West Germanic *kalu, from Proto-Germanic *kalwaz (bald), from Proto-Indo-European *golHwos (naked, bald).

Cognate with Old Frisian *kalu, Old Saxon kalu, Old Dutch *kalo, Old High German kalo.

Latin calvus (bald) and Sanskrit कुल्व (kulva, bald) are false cognates and derive from a different PIE root.
