Dutch pronunciation

edit

@Mnemosientje Have you ever heard this pronounced as /ˈʏpsilɔn/? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 10:01, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, on occasion. Especially around classicists and historical linguists I hear /ˈypsilɔn/ all the time as well. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 10:15, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Mnemosientje Thank you, that's pretty interesting. I reckon they prefer the unchecked vowel for historical reasons, while the nonspecialist pronunciations have checked vowels because a vowel before /ps/ is usually checked? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 11:31, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure tbh - figure people just don't want to say /ˈipsilɔn/ or /ˈɛi̯psilɔn/ (although no doubt some do). As far as specialist pronunciations go you hear a lot of variation. I sometimes find myself saying /yˈpsilɔn/ myself when speaking with classicists. You hear - and start saying - a lot of funny things when you interact a lot with classicists, I have found.
