Etymology

Uncertain. Suggested by Charatphon Patiyan to be from ข้าว (kâao, rice) +‎ หนม (sweet).[1] Compare Lao ເຂົ້າໜົມ (khao nom), Northern Thai ข้าวหนม.

Possibly related to Old Chinese 粔籹 (OC *ɡaʔ naʔ), a delicacy from the state of Chu.[2]
