Etymology

edit

From Middle Chinese 學生 (MC haewk sraeng). The use of the 呉音 (go'on, literally Wu sound) reading for the first character and the 漢音 (kan'on, literally Han sound) reading for the second character suggests either an innovation within Japanese, or later influence from another dialect of Chinese.
