Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾlpwt' /⁠kālbod⁠/, body, shape, form), from Ancient Greek καλοπόδιον (kalopódion, shoemaker’s last). Akin to Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫐𐫀𐫓𐫁𐫏𐫅 (kʾlbyd /⁠kālbid⁠/) and Old Armenian կաղապար (kałapar), գաղափար (gałapʻar), Iranian loanwords. Doublet of قالب (qâleb), the same Greek word via Arabic.
