editBorrowed from French pape ; or perhaps from Vulgar Latin papa (“title for priests & bishops, esp. & by 8th c. only the bishop of Rome”). Since in Burhān-i-Qāṭiʿ dictionary (17th century) saw this word in forms: پاپا , پاب and پاپ.[1]
