From {{inh|fi|fiu-fin-pro|*karva}}, an old {{border|fi|bat|-}} loan; derived from the same word from which e.g. {{cog|lt|gaũras}} is descended. Cognates include {{cog|vep|karv}}, {{cog|et|karv}} and {{cog|liv|kōra}}. Originally ''karva'' only had the meaning "color". In its current meaning it is first mentioned in a biblical text in 1621.<ref>{{R:Hakkinen 2004}}</ref>
