Cameron considers the film a direct sequel to his films The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2015) being described as occurring in alternate timelines.[4] The film stars Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Edward Furlong returning in their roles of the Sarah Connor, T-800 "Terminator", and John Connor, respectively, after 28 years, as well as Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna and Diego Boneta joining the cast.

Distributed by Paramount Pictures in North America and 20th Century Fox in other territories, the film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 1, 2019, in 2D, 3D[citation needed] and IMAX.

Premise

27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent from the future by Skynet in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a hybrid cyborg human (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, for a fight for the future.

Cast

  • Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor: The mother of John Connor, who will become the future leader of the Human Resistance in the war against the machines (Skynet). She hunts and kills Terminators to prevent Judgment Day and forestall the coming conflict.[6]
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800 "Model 101" / Carl: An aging Terminator, one of several sent back in time to kill John Connor in the past.[7] Having abandoned his mission and living in seclusion, he is recruited by John's mother Sarah to help protect Dani Ramos.[8]
  • Brett Azar serves as the body double for the young T-800, while CGI will be applied to recreate Schwarzenegger's facial likeness from 1991 in flashback scenes.[9]
  • Edward Furlong as John Connor:[10] The son of Sarah Connor, portrayed as a messianic figure who was destined to save the remnants of mankind upon Judgment Day (a nuclear holocaust that would claim three billion human lives), years in the future, from an apocalyptic war against the machines (Skynet) as leader of the Human Resistance, as well as the more specialized resistance unit he personally led, Tech-Com.[11]
  • Jude Collie serves as the body double for young John Connor, while CGI will be applied to recreate Furlong's facial likeness from 1991 in flashback scenes.[12][13]
  • Mackenzie Davis as Grace, a soldier-assassin converted into a cyborg and sent from the future to protect Dani Ramos from the new advanced Terminator prototype.[14]
  • Natalia Reyes as Daniella "Dani" Ramos, a young woman targeted for termination by the new advanced Terminator prototype.[15]
  • Gabriel Luna as Rev-9, an advanced Terminator sent back in time to terminate Dani, consisting of a traditional solid endoskeleton surrounded by a "skin" of mimetic poly-alloy. In contrast to its predecessors, Rev-9 possesses the ability to separate these two components into two separate, fully autonomous Terminator units.[16]
  • Diego Boneta[17] as Miguel Ramos, Dani's older brother.
  • Steven Cree [18]
  • Enrique Arce[19]

Despite rumors that Michael Biehn would be reprising his role as Kyle Reese from The Terminator and the uncut version of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Biehn confirmed in an interview that he will not be joining the cast of the film or any future installments.[20]

Production

Development

In December 2013, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a television series was in the works, which would tie into a new Terminator trilogy.[21][22] On September 5, 2014 Paramount announced that Terminator Genisys would be the first film in a new standalone trilogy, with two sequels scheduled for release on May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.[23][24] On February 24, 2015, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that he would be returning for the first sequel in his role as the T-800.[25] While promoting Genisys in Berlin in June 2015, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison and COO Dana Goldberg said that the spin-off TV series was still in development.[26] A month later, Paramount and Skydance declined to comment about the status of the sequel and TV series, although they confirmed that international box-office performance would be taken into consideration.[27] As of September 2015, Terminator Genisys had failed to earn the required $150 million in China to fast-track a sequel.[28]

On October 1, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter said that the sequels and television spin-off were on hold indefinitely because Terminator Genisys had failed to break even.[29] On October 6, Goldberg said that she "wouldn't say [the franchise is] on hold, so much as re-adjusting". According to Goldberg, despite Genisys' disappointing domestic performance, the company was happy with its worldwide numbers and still intended to make new films and the TV series. Production of a sequel would begin no earlier than 2016 because the company planned market research to determine its direction after Genisys.[30]

In January 2016, Paramount announced that the sequel had been removed from its 2017 release schedule.[31] In April 2016, Emilia Clarke, who played Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, said that she would not return for any sequels.[32] Ellison felt that Terminator Genisys could have been better, so he recruited franchise creator James Cameron to produce the subsequent film with him in hopes of creating a better film.[33] Cameron agreed to produce the film on the condition that Schwarzenegger be involved in it.[34][35]

Cameron was involved with the project as of January 2017, and Ellison was searching for a writer among science fiction authors with the intention that Tim Miller direct it. The film was reportedly a reboot, suggesting the Terminator Genisys storyline had been discarded.[36] By March 2017, the studio had chosen not to pick up the options of Schwarzenegger and Clarke, as the sequel to Genisys had been removed from the studio's release schedule.[37]

Later in the month, Ellison said there would be an announcement regarding the future of the franchise before the end of the year, and that it was going to be in a direction that would provide "the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2".[38] In April 2017, Schwarzenegger said that he was looking forward to being in another Terminator film, and there are negotiations for another studio to pick up the franchise from Paramount and Cameron producing.[39]

In July 2017, Cameron said that he is working with Ellison to set up a trilogy of films and supervise it. The intention is for Schwarzenegger to be involved to some extent, but also introduce new characters and "pass the baton".[40] Schwarzenegger was later confirmed to be reprising his role.[41]

Pre-production

On September 12, 2017, Skydance Media confirmed that Miller will direct the new Terminator film.[42] The film's story was drafted and conceived by Miller, Cameron, and Ellison. A team of writers – consisting of David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Josh Friedman (creator of the television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) – was hired to write the script and to map-out the overall story-arc of a trilogy; under the supervision of Cameron and Miller. By November 2017, Billy Ray was brought in to polish the script.[43] By January 2018, Goyer revealed that a draft of his script was completed.[44]

Miller said that the destruction of Cyberdyne at the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day is an event which would change the future "but no one knew how. And I don't think the movies that came after it really explored that in a clean way like I believe we are, with true consequences, and it makes perfect sense for Sarah to be the one to face those consequences since they were her choices to begin with."[45] Before screenwriters were hired, Miller requested that a group of novelists be consulted on how to reinvent the franchise. Among the novelists was Joe Abercrombie, who suggested the idea of a female character who is half human and half machine, forming the origins of the character Grace.[46] Linda Hamilton was pleased with the film's characters, and felt that earlier sequels to Terminator 2 lacked characters that the audience would care about.[47]

The film's writing credits, as recognized by the Writers Guild of America are screenplay by David S. Goyer & Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray; story by James Cameron & Charles H. Eglee & Josh Friedman and Goyer & Rhodes.

In May 2017, Schwarzenegger confirmed he would appear in the next Terminator film, with Cameron overseeing the production.[48] In September of the same year, it was announced Hamilton would return to reprise her role as Sarah Connor.[49] Because previous Terminator films did not do well with audiences, Miller felt it was necessary to have Hamilton reprise the role.[45] Cameron said that he sent Hamilton a "long rambling email with a lot of reasons why she should do it and a lot of reasons why she shouldn't." Cameron's main reason for why Hamilton should return was that people liked her in the role.[33] There was never a version of the film that excluded Hamilton, and Miller said there was no backup plan in the event that she declined the role.[50]

After several weeks, Hamilton chose to sign on to the film,[45] which did not yet have a completed script for her to read as it was still being refined.[51] Because so much time had passed since her 1991 appearance as Sarah Connor, Hamilton had assumed that she would never reprise the role, and she was surprised by the offer to do so.[45] Hamilton said about her decision to return, "I was very pleased that all of the years had passed, because I could fill the years up with so much backstory and inner life that could power the character."[51] Hamilton spent more than a year working with a fitness trainer to get into physical shape for the role.[51][45]

The production was also looking to cast an 18 to 20 year-old woman to be the new centerpiece of the story.[49] Hamilton rehearsed lines with several actresses who were auditioning for the role of Dani, and she immediately felt that Natalia Reyes was the right choice.[52] In March 2018, it was announced that Mackenzie Davis had been cast in the film.[14] Miller said about Davis, "I didn't just want a woman who could physically fit the role but emotionally as well. Mackenzie really wanted to do it; she came after the role. She worked harder than anybody."[46] After Davis was cast, she undertook physical training for the film's fight scenes.[53]

Because the film is partially set in Mexico City, the cast includes several Latinx actors,[54][55] including Reyes, Diego Boneta, and Gabriel Luna, who were cast as primary characters in April 2018.[15] Reyes said, "This movie is a reflection of Hollywood now. We are just changing these stereotypes and the ideas and the cliches of what a Latino should be."[54] By June 2018, Jude Collie had been cast as the double for a young John Connor, with Brett Azar reprising his role from Genisys as the body double for a younger T-800.[12] On July 18, 2019, during a panel for the film at San Diego Comic-Con, Cameron confirmed that Edward Furlong would be returning to reprise his role of John Connor.[11]

Filming

Production was initially intended to start in March 2018, but was delayed due to casting. It was then expected to start during May and end during November with filming taking place in Hungary, United Kingdom, Spain and Mexico.[56] Filming began on June 4, 2018, under the working title Terminator 6: Phoenix,[19][57][58] in Isleta del Moro, Almería, Spain,[59][60] followed by Origo Film Studios, Budapest, Hungary,[61][62][63][64] with the intention of shooting for a month there before filming the rest of the film in the United States. In late July 2018, Schwarzenegger began filming scenes in Budapest.[65] Filming moved to the United States in mid-October.[66] Schwarzenegger completed filming on October 28, 2018.[67] Filming wrapped in early November 2018.[68]

While filming in Spain, Luna coached several actors on how to speak Spanish with a Mexican accent.[54] Hamilton rejected certain lines of dialogue that she felt were uncharacteristic for Sarah Connor.[51][69] Cameron provided feedback on Miller's director's cut of the film.[46] In July 2019, there were plans to expand Luna's role with upcoming reshoots.[53]

Post-production

According to Cameron in February 2019, the film's working title was Terminator: Dark Fate.[70] This was confirmed to be the film's official title the following month.[3]

Visual effects

The visual effects are provided by Industrial Light & Magic and Scanline VFX, supervised by Alex Wang, David Seager, Arek Komorowski and Eric Barba as the Production Supervisor with help from Blur Studio, Digital Domain, Method Studios, Unit Image, Rebellion VFX, The Third Floor, Inc. and Cantina Creative.[71]

Music

In March 2019, it was announced that Junkie XL would compose the score for the film.[72]

Marketing

A first-look promotional image showing the film's three lead actresses was released in August 2018. It was the subject of misogynistic Internet comments.[73][74] The film's first trailer was released on May 23, 2019,[75] and features the cover version of Björk's "Hunter" performed by John Mark McMillan.[76][77] At the 2019 E3, it was revealed that the upcoming video game Gears 5 will have players be allowed to play as either Sarah Connor with Linda Hamilton voicing her character or a T-800 Terminator model.[78]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures in North America and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures outside of North America on November 1, 2019.[79] In May 2019, Cameron said the film would be R-rated, after the previous two installments were PG-13.[80][81] Miller said the film would be rated R because "the fans kind of demanded it, in a way", saying that "the DNA of Terminator is an R-rated movie. So to not do it R feels disingenuous to the source material".[35]
