Walker was born in 1837, at Bowlandstow, [[Midlothian]], Scotland, the eldest son of Sir William Stuart Walker ([[Order of the Bath|KCB]]). He received his education at [[Glenalmond College|Trinity College, Glenalmond]] in [[Perthshire]] and then at [[Trinity College, Oxford]].
