This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Hildanknight (talk | contribs) at 11:01, 18 February 2006 (Wikipedia: Easy to read, difficult to edit.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you're new to our community, drop us a note here and tell us a little bit about yourself. Most important, we would like to know about your interests (for which we have a separate page), your areas of knowledge, and the sorts of things you'd like to work on here at Wikipedia. That makes it easier for us to help you start editing. We'd also appreciate it if you told us how you found out about Wikipedia.

To add yourself to the list:
  • post a comment,
  • enter your name as the subject/headline (which will make a new header for you in the log), and
  • sign your name at the end of your comment by typing four tildes: ~~~~. (This code makes a link to your user page, which readers can use to welcome you personally if they like).
Your comments will then be added to the bottom of the list.

You may also like to add yourself to other lists, such as the listing in order of arrival, by country, or by skills (such as translation or photography). Finally, if you want a little personal assistance in using or contributing to the site, you might go through one of the Bootcamps.

An automatically generated list of new users can be found at Special:Log/Newusers.

Robert Marda

Hello, I am Robert Marda. I am 38 years old. I live in Virginia near Washington D.C. I have used Wikipedia a few times in the past. Today I took the time to learn more about Wikipedia and after a few searches saw an area where I could add some information so I decided to create a user name before starting to edit.

I have experience with tropical fresh water fish that I believe will allow me to add to Wikipedia.

I am a SQL Programmer and work with SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.

hi, i am a person who has dyslexia and aspergers syndrome, so i hope you will all forgive my occasional mispellings...(in articles, I will use a spellchecker, but i figure just chatting its not that important.)

I learned to speed read when I was 8 years old, and I lived in Provo, which is kind of a suburb of Brigham Young University. My mother was getting her masters in Psychology, (and would have gotten a Doctorate in Religion but they didn't give them out to women at the time.)

So I started reading adult Level textbooks, mostly about Psychology, when I was about 8 and a half,...

WE moved from Provo to new Jersey, and then from Jersey to Denver after being in Jersey for only six months when I was 12. I sped read most of the contents of the local bookstores, and started hanging out on the much more accessible and much less formal college campuses,... the point of all of which is, I'm a college brat Speed Reader.

I can read (if given silence and space) about 100 pages an hour, or, a whole textbook in a single sitting.

Other than that, I'm sure you will all be amused to know I dropped out of Highschool....lol.

My interests include, but are not limited to; Psychology, Sociology, Metaphysics, Philosophy, Conversational Logic, Politics, Physics, Theoretical Physics, World Religions, World Religious History, Ecological Science, Biochemistry, Human Evolution movement, Permacultural Science, Psychonautics, Trance Technologies, Lucid visualization, Drawing+ Drafting, Internet conversations, Space Exploration, Theoretical XenoBiology, Theoretical XenoSociology,Arcologies, Arcology design, Qaballah Tree of Life Arcology Design,...

I'm not too sure that I will spend too much time on wikipedia, but i have a proposal in for a Wikicity (ThinkStarship) and it sounds like if they let me have that, I'll also be spending time in WikiBooks.

I spent a lot of time on the net in the last ten years, most of which i think was wasted time, because what i wanted and tried to create for myself was group collaborative efforts on creative projects... So I am pleased to find WikiMedia, and etc.

I'll try to keep off any soap boxes, I guess i should confess that I am pretty deep into World Religions and Politics, and while I don't consider myself to have an opinion, but rather, to have spent the time and energy to be invested in the facts, I'm sure thats what most people think,...lol. regarding editing of "congressional record"

Heard today that unnamed "congresssional staffers" have been discovered changing factual material regarding their employers, our "elected things". Mention was made of these staffers being "twenty something types", I'm 73 and perhaps a bit of a grouch, and likely old fashioned enough to believe that facts are immutable things, not subject to change on the basis of whatever might be convenient at the moment. Mention was also made, re these satffers, that they are not familiar with old fashioned recorded facts, being perhaps computer oriented, or something to that effect, correct me if memory fails me. I repeat my earlier comment about the immutability of facts, they don't change with the fashion of the day. at least I don't think that they do.

Point of the foregoing is the following, something that you all might consider doing. When you come upon such foolishness, seemingly you have, that the deleted/altered factual matter should be reprinted, in the largest avaialble type face, see I told you I was old, along with, if possible, the names of the staff idiots responsible.

As for these staffers themselves, people that I assume are university graduates, what in blazes were they doing during the college courses they should have been paying attention to, for instance, courses dealing with ethics, assuming that they took any such courses. It strikes me that the post of congressional staffer is a position of public trust, and that our elected things aught to pay more attention to whom it is that they place in such positiions, than they seemingly do.

Salutations -

Having finally created a user account after years of using and developing an ever-deepening appreciation for Wikipedia and the entire Wiki project, I realize suddenly that I have a tremendous amount of reading to do and information to absorb if I wish to grow into a useful contributor with the proper appreciation for both style and policies.

I find the idea of participating in such an ambitious endeavour as the Wiki project to be quite exciting (perhaps something like William Chester Minor, proffering my small - but hopefully useful - lunatic contributions to the work of saner, if not greater, men), but the learning curve appears daunting at first, particularly when viewed against the amount of time I expect to be able to devote.

I welcome well-intentioned and good-natured advice or pointers from those who are inclined to offer them, and look forward to mastering the many finer points of editing productively here.
Thank you -- Tenmiles 06:35, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm a new user and not entirely clueless, but close. I came over from Yahoo Answers, a beta program that has got me addicted. I noticed many of the best answers cited Wikipedia as their source, so here I am.

I'm confused about a lot of things, not just Wikipedia. For example, chat rooms. I tried a Yahoo chat room, but there were quite a few people signed on at once, and so no DIAlog was possible. Are there (free) chat rooms that created one-on-one chats for people to have the electronic equivalent of a conversation?

How will you answer my question? Is my email address available to the "new user support group," or should I include it here? I don't want my email address to be generally available to the entire net.

Hello,

I have been at Wikipedia for a while, but I felt that perhaps it would be appropriate to introduce myself formally. I am an undergraduate student in philosophy and political science, with a passion for sociology (which I aspire to earn a doctorate degree in subsequent to graduation). I am particularly interested in social philosophy, philosophy of science (and social sciences), phenomenology, epistemology (and social epistemology), and philosophy of the mind, as well as international relations (as interactions of legitimated institutions on a global scale); more specifically, I am interested in the area of overlap between these fields. Among my favorite thinkers are Bourdieu, Foucault, Weber, and many others.

My user page has a much more thorough introduction of myself. Feel free to drop a line on my talk page. I look forward to contributing to the Wikipedia. I believe that it is a truly amazing phenomenon. Perhaps this a more marxist version of Isaac Asimov's encyclopedia galactica...?

Kind regards,

Hello all.

I've been using Wikipedia ocassionally as a reference for a couple of years.....don't remember for sure how I discovered it.

Decided to look at what there was about fly fishing, just one of many areas of interest, and discovered that it isn't much. I'll try to add some material as time permits.

Other interests include woodworking, bicycle touring, backpacking, a newfound desire to learn to make music (just bought a guitar a couple of months ago), cooking, and what may best be described as pathologically compulsive reading.....I'm drowning in books. Ah well, there are worse ways to go.

Looking forward to participating although a bit nervous about it.WolfgangS 20:04, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Molly Mockford

Molly Mockford, from Lewes, Sussex, UK. I've been a Usenet addict for quite some years, and am a self-employed web site designer, but the Wikipedia concept is a recent and increasingly-fascinating part of the Internet for me. I started off tweaking a wee bit here and there, making absolutely sure my facts were correct, but hiding shyly behind my IP address; then I decided I'd better register and go public with my edits. My areas of interest are wide-ranging; my areas of real expertise are necessarily much less so!

I wish I could remember how I first hit upon Wikipedia, but I can't. I keep getting drawn back, though. Google must have noticed my lack of attention to it, since Wikipedia is now usually my first port of call with any factual query - and editing is, to my view, the best way of repaying what I gain from it. I don't expect to be very active for a while yet; there's a lot to learn first.

My main interest is in the health related fields, especially old (pre-1930), Traditional, and Alternative methods. I notice Wikipedia is lacking in such things, and I'm hoping to get a bunch of expired copyright books in wikibooks sometime soon.

I am a new user, entered on February 9, 2006, and am interested in artificial reefs, or, more specifically, artificial reefs constructed for the dual purposes of surfing and swimming.

Artificial surfing reefs are a relatively new phenomena; man-made reefs historically have been built for marine habitat enhancement--most often by scuttling old ships.

Nations including Australia, New Zealand, and England have built or are discussing building artificial surfing reefs (with considerable enthusiasm!), but thus far little interest has been shown in the U. S. outside the surfing community.

Factual information about the pros and cons of building underwater structures for recreation purposes (and also coastal erosion control) is needed so coastal communities can decide whether building such reefs is desirable.

NeonDaylight

Hi, I'm Annemarie, from Northeast England (Darlington). My two main passions are literature (which is probably going to be my main source of contribution) and music - I love rock, soul, blues, classical and a hell of a lot more, and play guitar. My interests are all over the place, though. Feel free to say hi, I'm pretty friendly. =) NeonDaylight 10:08, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Manymegs

Hello, all-- Manymegs here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA- where I work at a translation service, principally handling Chinese--> English, French--> English, and even some Japanese--> English Translations. On occasion, I have been known to do some English--> Chinese (simplified or traditional) translation as well.

For the moment, I am just focused on learning the ropes, but I hope to move on to translation and/or cleanup type projects soon.

Cheers- Manymegs 19:17, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I'm attracted to Wikipedia because I have a general interest in the subjects of consciousness, communications, and developing information resources. I also enjoy writing or attempting to write, as the case may be.

Already I see were I'd like to see a page created called Seth_Material.

The path that led me to Wikipedia specifically originates from my interest in the Seth Material. For over a decade, I've been on a mailing list called Sethworks. On that list in the mid-to-late 90's, I met Alfredo, who eventually took over the hosting of Sethworks on his own Dreamworld server. Occasionally, Alfredo also experiments with various types of forum software at his server site.

In June of 2005, Alfredo announced on Sethworks that he was hosting his own Wiki site at Dreamworld named dreamwiki. I registered with dreamwiki and begin experimenting with it's interface, one very similar to Wikipedia's interface. But other than my own, there has been little user activity on dreamwiki since it's creation.

Now, I think that I had previously encountered Wikipedia in 2001 or 2002 while running a search engine on something else that I can't recall at the moment. So, I was aware of it. But I hadn't elected to join the community until recently.

The concept of group editing fascinates me more and I hanker for more interaction with others within this environment.

So, here I am.

Some stats are: Male, Mid-50's, Married; in Austin, Texas, USA. In 1969, I decided that life is a school of change and that I should be adaptable. More details are on a personal bio page that may be found here. And here's a link to my home page.

Procrastinathan

Hello, I’m a bearded university student from north England. My username may prove to be a good indicator of how much I contribute, but hopefully now I have registered I'll be more inclined to add and alter content. My main areas of knowledge are in computing, video games, comedy (British or otherwise) and animation. However, like everyone else here, my interests encompass many other areas. I hope to be of service to the community.

Anthony Orzel

Hello! My name is Anthony Orzel and I'm 12 years old. I've recently joined Wikipedia-my brother Daniel made an account first under the name of Daniel O so he asked me to create one. If you have got anything good on Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter, make sure you plaster it on my discussion page! Happy editing!

CathyB

I'm interested in poetry and literature, most of all new poets and authors. I am considerably well-read and have joined Wikipedia because I'd like to write/edit articles about great poets and authors to make the resource more up-to-date and perhaps a little more avant-garde. Thanks, CathyB5 19:07, 12 February 2006 (UTC)CathyB[reply]

I had stumbled upon Wikipedia a couple of times before while using google for research. Last night I sat for a while and simply searched for article after article. I always enjoyed browsing encyclopedia as a kid. When I got tired of one thing, I could flip the page and be on something entirely different! But aside from that, I'd like to contribute a bit here and there where I can. I'm teaching myself German, and am also interested in languages in general. This morning I was reading a bit of information about Old English and Middle English. I'd like to learn more about that as well. I like movies, animation, art, music, and video games as well. I'll be looking for chances to contribute!

I am a lawyer in Dover, Ohio, with experience in environmental whistleblower cases. I also work with a Guatemalan immigrant community. I have added to the following Wikipedia pages so far:

I find the watch list unworkable. My watchlist gets swamped with entries from "talk." The only way I have found to check changes to my contributions is to check each page's history individually.

I prefer ISO dates, like 2006-02-12.

I prepare a weekly synopsis of the NPR puzzle with Will Shortz. [1] I enjoy photography, unicycling, racquetball, step aerobics and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I also enjoy vigorous discussion, so feel free to email me. Richard Renner 2006-02-12

Amr Bekhit

I was introduced to Wikipedia by a friend, and have used it a couple of times as a quick reference when studying. My interests are electronics and programming. The reason I joined the Wiki users was to add an article about mathematical modelling of diodes, for which I have found very little information on the internet and I needed to understand how it worked. You can see the article about Diode Modelling. I have been kindly informed that I have not specified the copyright and lisence of my images and so I'm in the process of doing so now.

Licese for an image

I received a message saying that I should tag an image that I used in an article. The image can be used freely. I want to change the property of the image, I don't want a huge copyright notice in the middle of the article. How do I do it? Nanoflop 21:41, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whane

I'm a new user and an aspiring contributor most interested in contributing to gaming articles such as MMORPG's and Browser-Based MMORPG's. However I do have an interest in a variety of topics a few of which I may be qualified to contribute in. I do however have a large weakness for grammar and spelling in general so I'm not sure how well any of my contributions would be received.

When I registered my account, I was under the impression that this service would be fairly simplistic to use but already I am beginning to feel a little overwhelmed with more options than I imagined such as the user and talk pages for example; am I the only one that sees Wikipedia as a viable if not better option than myspace? -- Whane 01:35, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I'm up to creating my own pages just yet, but I'll stick around and edit for grammar, punctuation, syntax, and spelling. If one is going to be an English teacher, I suppose one should act the part...

I look forward to learning the ropes around here!

Wikipedia: Easy to read, difficult to edit.

I'm 14 and have been enjoying reading Wikipedia articles on my favourite topics (computer companies/products/games, local artistes/TV shows/movies and more) for several months.

I finally decided to sign up for an account and contribute to Wikipedia.

However, I find the Wikipedia editing page interface slightly difficult to use. It doesn't act like a WYSIWYG editor or HTML editor.

I also had trouble understanding the NOR rule. Not everything can be easily identified as original research. For example, let's say I am a fanatic of a particular movie. If I want to write an article on it, I cannot use my own knowledge to add information on the plot?! What about computer games? It is difficult to obtain non-original research about my favourite computer games. The NOR rule means that even if I have no knowledge of something, I can simply Google for sources, read them and then write an article based on the sources. Being an expert on something does not offer me any advantage in editing/writing articles.

My first full article was Gmail Help Discussion. I wrote it largely to get familiar with Wikipedia's editing format, rules, etc.

The article was marked as having original research or unverified claims.

Today, while trying to write an article about Google Groups (which I intend to be more serious about), I was told that I was banned for three hours. Academic Challenger cited "vandalism, shared IP" as the reason. The ban was apparently lifted after 5 minutes. Are any of my edits considered vandalism? Has my account been hijacked? Should I leave Wikipedia?

I also believe it is possible to vandalize another Wikipedia user's user page. To test this theory, I "vandalized" Academic Challenger's user page with a paragraph asking him for more information on my ban. While I understand and approve of Wikipedia's open concept, I think making user pages freely editable is too open. It is more likely to be misused than used. This is a major concern, especially since a vandal can make people's user pages read "I am an idiot" or something to that effect. If there is a way one can protect their user page, I'd like to know.

This may seem somewhat of a rant, but I hope it will help other Wikipedians gain insights into the difficulties of Wikipedia, and that I may receive help from experienced users.
