Shakujii-kōen Station (石神井公園駅, Shakujii-kōen-eki) is a train station located in the town of Shakujii, in Tokyo's Nerima-ku. It is served by the Ikebukuro Line of Seibu Railway. Shakujii-kōen is the 10th station leaving from Ikebukuro Station (incl. Ikebukuro Station) on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.

Layout

As of February 2010, the station is under construction of elevated tracks and platforms. On February 7, 2010, the new elevated platform for Ikebukuro-bound trains (north side of the station) was opened. Only one platform for Tokorozawa-bound trains continued to be on the ground level and was removed after the completion of the new Number 2, in April 17, 2011. The current number 1 of the elevated station was completed in June 23, 2012.

Until the start of the construction, the station consisted of two sets of island platforms numbered from south to north with exits on the north and south sides.

There were separate sets of ticket gates at the two entrances to the concrete station house, instead of facilities on a walk-through bridge over the platforms that is common in modern stations. This required pedestrians who cross the station block to detour to the level crossings near the station. Due to heavy traffic of the trains that seriously intercepted road traffic, it was not uncommon for people to cross the tracks in dangerous manner; efforts to resolve the problem, i.e. conversion to elevated railway tracks, were hastened. As a part of the work, an underpass connecting both sides of the station was made and is used by both passengers and passing pedestrians.

Ground-level platforms

Two platforms served three tracks; the middle track had platforms on the both sides. One side was numbered 2 and the other was 3.

Elevated platforms

Presently, there are two platforms serving four tracks.

Neighborhood

The roads around the station's south entrance are quite narrow and efforts have been made to encourage use of the north entrance, a larger, more open area where bus stops, parking, an Isetan supermarket, and bicycle racks are located. However, the south entrance, closer to residential areas, traditional shopping streets, and Shakujii Park (Shakujii Kōen), continues to see greater use, the area around it being quite congested around rush hour times. Plans to expand this station plaza area have been included in upcoming track-laying construction projects.

History

The station was first established as Shakujii Station on April 15, 1915, and renamed Shakujii Kōen Station on March 1, 1933. Parts of the rails used as a roof structure of platforms date back to 1926. The station was elevated on February 7, 2010 (Platforms 3&4), April 17, 2011 (Platform 2) and June 23, 2012 (Platform 1).
