Seraphim Rose: The True Story and Private Letters (2000) is a biographical book by author Cathy Scott about her uncle Seraphim Rose, formerly known as Eugene Rose, a hieromonk of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. The book's foreword was written by Father Alexey Young.
Content
The author collected 140 of Seraphim Rose's previously unreleased private letters and incorporated them in the biography that traces his intellectual journey, chronicling the deep spiritual search that led him to the Orthodox faith, according to Frank Schaeffer, publisher of Regina Orthodox Press, which released the book. It also contains 30 color and black-and-white photographs.
Reception
Benedict Seraphim wrote that the letters in the book "set out the gradual conversion of Father Seraphim from his former life to his life as Orthodox," and that "it is a book well worth reading, and for those who revere Father Seraphim and wish to know as much about his life as possible, it is a book well worth owning." The book faced criticism from some Eastern Orthodox faithful for its revelation that Rose was homosexual and that a gay relationship was partly responsible for Rose's conversion to Russian Orthodoxy.
About those calling for the Church’s formal declaration of Rose's sainthood, Giacomo Sanfilippo, editor of Orthodoxy in Dialogue, wrote that Scott ... as Rose's biographer doesn't have any wish to "obstruct her subject’s veneration as a saint." The author simply insists "that the full story be told," Sanfilippo wrote.
