editalso in the first world war the caves were used for holding gun powder (It wasn't gunpowder, it was Pitric Acid and TNT, between 500 and 1000 tons) 5.81.115.230 (talk) 10:09, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
in the very deep end of the caves (the run numbers are in the 'saxon' section, the series closest to the surface) 5.81.115.230 (talk) 10:09, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
The real length of passageway(s and gallerys)in Chislehurst Caves is around 6-7 miles.
They were being worked as recently as the 1850s, when chalk was raised up (one of the) shaft(s) one of which was located in the back garden of a house in Old Hill - "Highclear" (the other is called "Woodlands" and emerges in a garden in Susan Wood.)
There are three other mines in the valley of the Kyd Brook, all of which are contemporaneous with Chislehurst Caves. None are open to the public, and only one is currently accessible.
