Merger with Save girls

[edit]

These are duplicate articles on the same topic, and while the Save girls article is older, this seems to be better titled (I would also be ok with dropping the word Yojana in the article title or replacing it with campaign as on the official website). Abecedare, what are native English speakers going to search for? --NeilN talk to me 19:34, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The literal translation of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" would be "Save the daughters. Educate the daughters" although in a quick search the government website and Indian media seem to mainly use the BBBP formulation. The Save girls is a (good faith but faulty) on-wiki rename of the same scheme (see early version of the article). That said, I am very much open to re-titling if there are any viable alternatives. Keeping my admin hat on, I would point to this sentence from WP:MERGE: "If the need for a merge is obvious, individual editors can be bold and simply do it." --NeilN talk to me 19:49, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) FWIW, NYT and BBC also refer to the scheme as BBBP, parenthetically translating it as "Save the Daughter, Teach the Daughter" and "campaign to save and educate the girl child" respectively.
One correction to my above posts: The save girls page pre-dates Modi's launch of the BBBP campaign, and the title is a correct translation of "Beti bachao" (although I would translate it as "Save the daughter(s)", or "Save the girl child"). I still think the articles should be merged, since BBBP is the much more prominent name of essentially the same campaign (the notability of the former campaign by itself is questionable at best). I'llmerge the pages later this week, unless there are any objections or alternate suggestions. Abecedare (talk) 19:57, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
