Welcome to WikiProject Northern Ireland!

This project exists to better organize information in articles related to Northern Ireland. This page and its subpages exist to help us collaborate and share ideas related to improving Northern Ireland-related content. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

Scope & Motivation

[edit]

The vast majority of this project was unashamedly ripped from another project: Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles, and the creator of this project extends recognition for the tireless work involved in formatting, text, policy and many other aspects by Kingboyk, Lar and himself.

For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.

This project has been created in an attempt to improve existing articles relating to Northern Ireland, and to help with the creation of needed articles. It aims primarily to provide information in consistent format for articles on places in, or related to Northern Ireland. On top of this, it aims to get the main Northern Ireland article to featured status, whilst aiding the maintenance and improvement of the Northern Ireland Portal.

Articles and categories relating to Northern Ireland are extensive and work needs to be/is being done across a multitude of areas. In order to gain the benefits of collaboration, please update this page with any relevant "to do"s.

Recent developments

[edit]
  • The Troubles discussion page. Not particularly recent, but its not something many people have been made aware of. The only references to it are on an archived deletion discussion and a user page.
  • Belfast has been successful as the Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography's collaboration of the month. For anyone who's interested in helping to get the article up to FAC standard, there are many resources and a guide available on the UK Geography Project page.

Participant identification

[edit]

WikiProject Northern Ireland participants should place one of the following lines of Wikitext on their user page to add it to Category:WikiProject Northern Ireland participants.

Wikitext userbox where used
[[Category:WikiProject Northern Ireland participants]] none linked pages

{{Template:User WP Northern Ireland|invite}} linked pages

For other Northern Ireland user templates see Category:Northern Ireland user templates.

Tasks

[edit]
  1. Invite new members, by contacting editors who have made substantial Northern Irish related edits in the past
  2. Fix templates to talk pages
  3. Construct /Article Classification by following the category 'tree'
  4. Assess articles at /Article Classification
  5. Add images to articles in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Northern Ireland

Major pending tasks

[edit]
  1. Modify WPNI template so that it follows the hierarchy structure found in Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia.
  2. Update all {{infobox Northern Ireland place}} templates to use include the new mapping function.
  3. Add the new {{WPNI}} template to all Northern Ireland-related articles' talk pages.
N.B. - please do not substitute the template, as any future changes to the template will not be updated automatically. On top of this, a substituted inclusion will not appear on the list of links that provides a gauge for the size of the WikiProject and ultimately all articles within the WikiProject (and does not include any non-relevant pages).
  4. Add new {{Northern Ireland history}} navigational template to the top of all Northern Ireland-history related articles.
  5. Compile a list of missing articles and catalogue them by status - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Ireland/Missing articles
  6. Insert templates on talk pages of Northern Ireland-related articles referring to new MOS (yet to be created) page.
  7. Create project space Manual of Style article and template.
  8. Implement a guidance template to direct users to all the relevant pages (as per WP:WPF)
  9. Implement a "Series on Northern Ireland" template along the lines of {{Christianity}}

Manual of Style (conventions)

Policies

[edit]

For geographic articles, project contributors developed this interpretation of the policy on What Wikipedia is not and the guidelines for style and notability.

The Troubles in location x

[edit]

Coverage of the Troubles on locality pages should be in proportion to the history of that place, i.e. a page on a 500 year old town should not have half its content on the Troubles. Where this does occur, the Troubles history should be reduced to an appropriate length and the remaining content moved to the appropriate 'The Troubles in...' page (The Troubles in Dungiven, The Troubles in Newry, etc.).

On 'The Troubles in...' pages, events are notable and should be included if:

1. Two or more people were killed

2. The event was the first of its kind (first attributed to a particular group, first bombing death etc.); first killing of a particular kind of person (first RUC officer killed, first republican paramilitary etc.); or is otherwise a significant 'first' in the Troubles as a whole - NOT just in that particular area.

3. The victim was inherently notable in his/her own right (i.e. worthy of a page of their own).

4. The event had a significant effect - i.e. directly led to a breakthrough in or breakdown of the peace process etc.

A series of relatively minor events can be included if they had significant impact on the area. For example individual arson attacks are not normally notable, but an apparent arson campaign which drives most of the local Catholics/Protestants out of an area is. The campaign (as opposed to individual attacks) and its effects must be properly documented and sourced. Likewise, a series of individual killings, for example the Shankill Butchers murders, may be included if the killings as a group were demonstrably notable.

Where possible, the total number of Troubles-related deaths should also be included, broken down into faction responsible and other relevant divisions.

Creation of articles

[edit]

Done

To do

  1. To improve at least several articles enough that they can become successful candidates for featured articles.
  2. To improve the standard of articles relating to Northern Ireland in general.
  3. To standardise many article types so that there is some measure of consistency throughout.
  4. To examine the number of red-links in articles within the scope, and to determine if they should be de-linked, or that articles should be created.
  5. Expand the sub-articles relating to the Belfast postal districts, which should all be cross-linked to the articles describing the places in that postal district.
  6. Continue maintenance of Northern Ireland Portal.
  7. Continue rollout of Template:Infobox UK place to replace Irish infobox per WP:UKCITIES

Substance

[edit]

Done

To do

  • The main Belfast article needs to achieve featured status.
  • Every locality needs at least a 500-character stub article, built on top of its framework article.
  • All areas of historic importance need substantial articles.

Tagged with WPNI template

[edit]

For a complete list of the progress of categories that have been manually searched and from which articles have been tagged with the project template, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Ireland/WPNI tagging progress.

Photographs

[edit]

Wikimedia Commons has a wide range of Northern Ireland-related photographs which can all be used freely to accompany articles in Wikipedia. See:

If you have any Northern Ireland-related photographs you could load them up to Wikimedia Commons for all to use.

Adopt an article

[edit]

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

Lists

[edit]

WikiProject Deletion sorting

[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting is a new effort that attempts to classify various articles nominated for votes for deletion by major categories. The Northern Irish articles-related articles at VFD are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Northern Ireland.

Requests

[edit]

I'd like to request help on a Sport in Derry City or Sport in County Londonderry page. If you are interested in assisting, leave me a message on my talk page.Ryannus 00:16, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the WPNI to two articles I am currently editing because they have a strong connection to Northern Ireland. If anyone would like to examine these and see if they have any advice to offer I would appreciate it. They are 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars and Queen's Royal Irish Hussars.GDD1000 (talk) 12:37, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia should not be biased towards one section of the community So seeing how Londonderry is the only official name of the city of Londonderry, the article should be called this. The High Court ruled that this is the only name of the City And until the name of the City is legally changed, wikipedia should only use official Names. Why not call the Mumbai article Bombay? Most citizens of Mumbai still call their city Bombay, but as the official name is Mumbai, the article is called this. So 'Derry' surely must be called Londonderry!

Unbongo - without taking a side, I only want to point out that this is a long-running dispute in Wikipedia. Derry's talk page has plenty of it. A vote was taken in 2005 to propose the article be renamed Londonderry/Derry, which failed. Then another vote was taken in 2007 to move it to Londonderry, and the result was no consensus. This is not to take a side, but just to let you know that this is a discussion which has spanned many years. If you'd like to get involved, I'd recommend doing so on the Derry talk page... but I warn you that there will be a long stewing pot of drama there. FlyingToaster 22:09, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disused railway stations in Northern Ireland

Disused railway stations in Northern Ireland, again

[edit]

Thanks for your help with the railway stations above! I've now got a much longer list of stations that are missing coordinates, which you can find at User:The Anome/Disused and heritage UK railway stations still lacking coordinates. I'd greatly appreciate any help projrct members can give to locating these. -- The Anome (talk) 16:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
