Guna (Gwalior United National Army)[3] is a city and a municipality in Guna district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Guna District under Gwalior Division and is located on the banks of Parbati river.

Guna was founded and rose to prominence in the mid-19th century when it became a military station for the Gwalior Cavalry. The presiding Hindu deity of Guna is Hanuman, whose temples are located to the east and west of the city. Jain temples in and around Guna are also an important sites.[4] Being a historical hot spot, Guna is home to a number of religious temples, forts, monuments, architecture etc.

Guna is located at 24°39′N 77°19′E / 24.65°N 77.32°E / 24.65; 77.32.[5] It has an average elevation of 474 metres (1555 ft).

Demographics

As of 2011 Indian Census, Guna had a total population of 180,935, of which 94,464 were males and 86,471 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 24,447. The total number of literates in Guna was 125,295, which constituted 69.2% of the population with male literacy of 75.3% and female literacy of 62.6%. The effective literacy rate of 7+ population of Guna was 80.1%, of which male literacy rate was 87.2% and female literacy rate was 72.3%. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes population was 27,631 and 3,623 respectively. Guna had 34383 households in 2011.[1]

As of 2001 India census, Guna has a population of 137,132. Males constitute 52.8% of the population and females 47.2%. Total number of literates was 91,322, giving a crude literacy rate 66.6% and an effective literacy rate of 78.4%. In Guna, a population of 20,648 (15%) was in the age range of 0–6 years.[9]

For higher education engineering private college Jaypee University of Engineering & Technology (JUET) situated near guna around 35 km.

The city has several colleges affiliated with Jiwaji University in Gwalior.

Bajrangarh fort
  • Bajrangarh Fort - The Bajrangarh fort had four gates in four directions. Inside the fort, Moti Mahal, Rangmahal, Ram Mandir, and Bajrang Mandir are still intact.[10]
  • Tekri Sarkar Hanuman Mandir - On high hills there is ancient temple of hanuman statue is placed facing the south direction. On the day of Hanuman Jayanti, a huge fair is organized in the city on the Tekri Sarkar[11]
  • Gopi Krishna Sagar Lake - Gopi Krishna Sagar Pond is a very beautiful pond. This is a popular place near Guna.
  • Shantinath Jain Mandir - The temple is dedicated to the 16th Tirthankara Shantinatha and is an important place of pilgrimage for the followers of Jainism.[12]

Economy

Guna district is leading for agriculture. Due to Guna being situated in the region of Sindh and Parvati rivers, the land here is fertile. Guna ranks first in the production of jowar and coriander.Wheat, sorghum (jowar), legumes, corn (maize), and oilseeds are the major crops grown in the surrounding area.

The main industries in Guna are cigarette making, cement, bicycle manufacturing, cotton ginning, oilseed milling, and hand-loom weaving. In Vijaipur of Guna District some factories are available like:[13][14]

Guna is well connected by road railway and Airway .

  • Roadway: Guna is located on Agra Bombey Road. Distance from Guna to Bhopal is about 218 km. Guna is connected by private bus services to all nearest major cities.
  • Rail way: Guna Junction Railway Station is located on Kota-Bina and Gwalior-Indore line. Train services Guna is situated on the Western Railway ‘s broad gauge line.[15]
  • Airway: Guna is Served by Guna Airstrip. The nearest Airport is in Gwalior, which is around 212 KMs from Guna.[16]
