Sam Tomkins (born 23 March 1989 in Milton Keynes, England) is an English professional rugby league footballer currently playing for Super League side Wigan Warriors. An England international, he has played his whole career to date with Wigan Warriors. He won the 2010 Super League Grand Final with Wigan. He is the current Super League Young player of the year, having held the accolade for the last two years. He is the younger brother of team mate Joel Tomkins and older brother of Wigan Warriors academy player Logan Tomkins. His usual position is at stand-off, although he has also featured at scrum-half and fullback.

Early life

Sam attended Mabs Cross Primary school and St John Fisher High school before beginning his career playing at stand-off for the amateur Wigan St. Patrick's rugby league club, progressing through the junior ranks as well as representing his service area and county before being signed for Wigan Warriors by Dean Bell and Brian Foley. He made his debut from the bench for the reserves, at just 17, in an away match against Castleford Tigers after some impressive performances in the academy. He went on to make 6 more appearances for the reserves that year, scoring 3 tries.

Tomkins played during the 2007 season, alongside Thomas Coyle at stand-off. He is also capable of playing at scrum-half. He finished the 2007 reserve season with 16 tries in 17 appearances. His club debut for the Wigan Warriors first team came on 13 January, 2007, against Warrington in Lee Briers' testimonial defeat. In 2008, he made his first appearance for Wigan in a professional competition on 12 May, starting the 2008 Challenge Cup fifth round match against Whitehaven, in which he scored five of Wigan's eighteen tries. He finished the 2008 season having scored 32 tries in 21 games for the reserves which led to many fans demanding he was given a regular go in the first team. Such was the demand that chairman Ian Lenagan promised fans that Sam Tomkins would play at least 10 games the following season.

2009 season

Tomkins received his Super League debut for the Wigan Warriors when he featured from the bench in a 18-24 win against Harlequins RL at The Twickenham Stoop – Wigan's first win of the official season – in round 3 of Super League XIV. He soon established himself as a regular first-team player during the 2009 season, appearing in seven of Wigan's opening ten games. His first two Super League tries came in an away victory against Salford at The Willows. Sam was awarded an England call-up for the July 13 international against France. [4]

On 30 June 2009 it was announced that Sam had signed an extended five-year contract at Wigan until the end of 2014.[5] Sam went onto have an excellent debut season with the club, playing 27 games and scoring 15 tries, including a man of the match display against Castleford Tigers away where he demonstrated some individual brillance scoring a hat-trick and almost winning the match single handed.[6] On 14th September 2009, Sam was named in the Engage Super League Dream Team at stand-off. On the 22nd of September was named Player of the year and Young player of the year at the Wigan Warriors awards evening.[7] He also won the Rookie of the Year award, presented by Rugby Leaguer & League Express. He was presented with the award by the parents of Leon Walker, the Wakefield reserve-team player who was tragically killed during a game earlier in the season. Tomkins also received the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Medal. On the 17th of October Sam made his debut for England in a friendly against Wales, England won the game 12-48, Sam contributed to the victory with a man of the match performance scoring three tries in the process. Sam then went on to play in all England's remaining games. On the 11th of January Sam won the Super League Young Player of the Year (under 21 at the start of 2009) and Rookie of the Year (for players who had played ten or fewer games at the start of 2009). [8]

2010

He was selected to play for England against France in the one-off test in 2010.[9]

During the 2010 season Tomkins played at fullback for several games. While finding some success in the position due to his quickness and agility, coach Michael Maguire stated "Sam is a good kid. He is such a good runner but I don't know if we'll make the move permanent." [10]

With 12 tries and 18 try assists, he helped Wigan have their most successful season in a decade and win the league leaders shield. He was rewarded with a place in the Engage Super League dream team, along with his brother, Joel, making the pair the first brothers named in the same dream team. [11]

Sam was also crowned Young Player of the Year 2010 at the annual Super League 'Man of Steel' awards dinner for the second season in succession.
