Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open regarding amending the paid-contribution disclosure policy to add the following text: Any administrator soliciting clients for paid Wikipedia-related consulting or advising services not covered by other paid-contribution rules must disclose all clients on their userpage.

Technical news

  • Administrators can now choose to add the user's user page to their watchlist when changing the usergroups for a user. This works both via Special:UserRights and via the API. (T272294)

range block

[edit]

Hey ST47, you blocked this one, and this is them too. Oh, and this. Can you see if one of your fancy longterm range blocks is appropriate here? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:24, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

none of those three IPs are in the same /16 (share the same first two octets), so I'm not sure what we would rangeblock here. ST47 (talk) 23:54, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: ah, I see that some of them are proxies. I've blocked a couple of ranges associated with this. ST47 (talk) 23:57, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I clicked on that proxy check button and I thought it told me they weren't. Ha, I appreciate your expertise. Drmies (talk) 00:29, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

... and another range block

[edit]

There's an unblock request at User talk:Wattyirl for a range block you placed on 84.203.0.0/16. Can you have a look at it? JBW (talk) 20:47, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Xaosflux, RoySmith and Cyberpower678 have been appointed to the Electoral Commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee Elections. BusterD is the reserve commissioner.

  • Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

Accursed Mountains

[edit]

Hi,

The topic related to Accursed Mountains should consider of changing the name. The article consists of information regarding the Albanian Alps. Its designation Accursed Mountains is a poetic and metaphorical name that stands only for a part of the Albanian Alps. Albanian Alps are located over inner and outer geological formations labelled as Albanide (south eastern extensions of Dinaride). Accursed Mountains is only a region in the Albanian Alps.

If another article needs to be created for the Accursed Mountains than it should be a separate topic. They are related, but Albanian Alps cannot be labelled as a second alternative name for Accursed Mountains. Albanian Alps are much bigger that include in their geological formation many regions. Accursed Mountains are part of Albanian Alps. The way the article it written suggests that Albanian Alps are an alterative name of Accursed Mountain. Albanian Alps have many places and regions within them, and one of them is the region called by its poetic and metaphorical name Accursed Mountains. The article about Accursed Mountains is misleading and provides wrong information. The current article about Accursed Mountains talks about Albanian Alps.

Thank you. 69.166.116.149 (talk) 21:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mind taking a look at your {{webhostblock}} of Special:Contributions/37.148.216.0/21? It may be overbroad: Special:Contributions/37.148.216.0/22 appears to be a residential/business ISP with a different ASN from the one you blocked. Note that this range is also gblocked, so if you determine a change/unblock is warranted please either let the stewards know or ping me so I can tell them. (As usual, this is related to an ACC request.)

range block

[edit]

[1] UTRS ticket [2] is the reference. Shouldn't that /22 block be a /24 block? The /22 seems to be walking into a range that is not a webhost. I haven't reserved that ticket in case you want to handle it. Dennis Brown 07:32, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dennis Brown: Looking at each of the constituent /24s, they are all proxy or cloud hosting services. In order, hostinger, packethub, and two by heficed. I think they're all eligible to stay blocked, and I note that the full /22 is also blocked globally. ST47 (talk) 22:12, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That was my thing, I noticed that ISP is on a /24, not a /22, so there seems to be some collateral damage with a /22 block. I have no issue with the /24 being blocked, but I don't quite understand why the /22 is needed. Maybe it is just my misunderstanding (always possible), but it seems the ISP you are trying to block is only /24. The *.*.93.*/24 that the user is using isn't HOSTINGER-HOSTING (*.*.92.*/24), it is a different ISP altogether, TEFINCOMSA-AS-AP. Both are using /24 only. Again, maybe you did this on purpose and I just don't understand, but it *seems* that the /22 is walking outside of HOSTINGER's range, which is only a /24. Are we sure TEFINCOMSA is a relay? 02:57, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
@Dennis Brown: the 93 range is Packethub which is a cloud service provider closely associated with public vpn services. google shows that tefincom is also closely associated with nordvpn. ST47 (talk) 04:10, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As someone who has contributed to many visa policies and map production over the past 2 years, I have recently been focusing on defending and cleaning up the suddenly increasing number of successors to "DENOSIO."

I plan to continue to defend editors who deface visa pages in the future. Lades2222 (talk) 06:20, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanamonde93: could you please take a look the IPs listed above (along with Special:Contributions/41.66.199.156) when you have a chance? They are all blocked as proxies/webhosts, but they each seemed to not be proxies/webhosts and should likely be unblocked. (I'm not picking on you, just saw you were recently active and a CU :)) — Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:04, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In matters of proxies, Mdaniels5757, I'm always going to defer to ST47; they know what they're doing, and I'm very green. I will note there is also a global block on your /21, whether that was placed independently or is based on the same information as ST47's, I don't know. If you would like, I could kick this to the CU mailing list, but I'm not going to take unilateral action here. Vanamonde93 (talk) 21:41, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vanamonde93 Sorry for the delay in responding. Mind if I send you a wikimail that you can forward to the list?
