The then-Politbiuro, with Brezhnev and Andropov the first two upper left. Gromyko is fourth from left. Gregorii Romanov, the party boss in Leningrad at this time, is in the middle of the lower row. Eduard Shevardnadze is the last one on the lower level, to the right - the lowest ranked member, in effect. But I'm pretty sure he outlived all the rest of them, and went on to be the president of the country of Georgia for a while after the collapse of the Soviet Union. |
