Stan Robinson[1] known as Substantial is a rapper from Prince George's County, Maryland. He now operates out of Virginia.[2]

Personal Life

Stanley Robinson was born in Prince George's County, Maryland. Growing up the first concerts he attended were Run DMC featuring Naughty By Nature, and Lords of the Unedrground.

Substantial has stated that some of his main influences are Native Tongues, Outkast, and Redman.

While on your in Japan in 2007 Substantial got alcohol poisoning. After that he stopped drinking entirely.

Career

Substantial gained prominence after collaborating with Japanese Hip-Hop producer Nujabes (Jun Seba). Substantial collaborated with Seba until his death in a car accident in 2010. Since then Substantial has produced albums on Seba's production company Hyde Out Productions.

Substantial released his debut album, To This Union a Sun Was Born in 2001, in collaboration with Nujabes. The album reached the top-10 charts of Japanese music.[3]

Collaborating with Nujabes once more, Substantial's music was featured on the Japanese anime TV series Samurai Champloo.[4]

January of 2008 his 2nd studio album Sacrifice was the #1 album in Japanese online sales.Substantial was featured in the Rap/R&B monthly Black Beat Magazine in March of 2008 in a full-page feature.

Later in 2008 Substantial's video for his single It's You (I Think) received the "Winning Freshman Video" award from MTV.[5] The video was posted on the MTV website, as was the following interview with Substantial.

Substantial interviewed fellow recording artist Common in 2009 after a performance at The Sonar in Baltimore.[6]

In 2011 Substantial worked with the American TV station VH1 to fund music studios for under-privileged youth.[7] For promotion of his most recent album Home Is Where the Art Is in 2012 he was hosted by the Smithsonian Institute for a performance as part of the Luce Unplugged program.[8]

Substantial now records as a member of the company QN5 Music.[9]
