Revision as of 18:33, 29 January 2011
The world's best-selling music artists lists artists with claims of 50 million or more record sales in multiple third-party reliable sources. The sales figures within the provided sources include sales of albums, singles, compilation-albums, music videos as well as downloads of singles and full-length albums. Within record-sales brackets, artists are listed in alphabetical order, rather than by number of records sold. The table the artists in which are listed with both their estimated sales figures and certified sales ranks the artist/band with most sales at the top.
All artists included on this list are required to have their lowest available claimed figures supported by at least 15% certified sales. It is this reason why Cliff Richard, Alla Pugacheva, Bing Crosby, Nana Mouskouri and A. R. Rahman have not been included on this list. Newer artists such as Lady Gaga are expected to have their claimed figures supported by at least 50% certified sales.
Note: Although this list largely relies on claimed figures by highly reliable sources, some of the figures may need further examination to avoid inflated sales figures which is frequently practiced by record companies for promotional purposes.[1][2]
Artists by reputed sales
The figures of total certified sales within the table below are based on certified sales of albums, singles (including digital downloads) and videos. Markets' order within the table is based on units each market generates respectively, largest market at the top and smallest at the bottom.[3]

Notes^
- Certification systems have been established periodically throughout the past half century, thus databases are not able to cover all sales.[65] Some (or all) records released and sold prior to the certification system's establishment year may not be found within the available searchable certification databases. Year of establishment (from largest market to smallest based on units each market generates respectively):[3]
- USA: 1958[65]
- Japan:1987:[66] (online certification-publishing covers certifications issued since 2003)
- United Kingdom: 1973[7]
- Germany: 1975[8]
- France: 1973[67]
- Canada: 1975[68]
- Australia: 1997[11] (online certification-publishing covers certifications issued since 1997, however there is evidence of earlier certifications)
- Spain: 2004[31] (online certification-publishing covers certifications issued since 2004, however there is evidence of earlier certifications)
- Mexico: 1999[69]
- Brazil: 1990[70]
- Netherlands: 1978[22]
- Argentina: 1980[71]
- Sweden: 1987[14] (published at end of each year)
- Switzerland: 1989[15] (online certification-publishing covers certifications issued since 1989, however there is evidence of earlier certifications)
- Austria: 1990:[16]
- Poland: 1995 [47]
- Finland: 1971[72]
- Some records have yet to reach a level of either the gold or the platinum award-levels, and some records have yet to reach a multi-platinum status.[65] The tables above include markets, the databases of which contain figures of 300,000 and above.
- Certification numbers might overstate sales if stores order more albums than they are able to sell, due to certifications generally being determined by shipments, not actual sales. Record labels must also pay a fee; therefore, they may not always apply for a certification each time a record reaches an accredited status, meaning certifications might not be visible in the databases for more than a short period of time after an album is released.[73][74][75]
- A large percentage of music markets experienced a decline in sales due to music piracy which began in 1999–2000;[76] consequently, associations opted to reduce their certification volumes. See the changes in Certification-award-levels in the following markets:
- A report in 2009 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry revealed that 95% of music downloads are done illegally.[90] Illegal downloads are not included in the certifications and figures of artist's sales.
- The tables are to include two sources only for each claimed figure.
