Hold the Girl is the upcoming second studio album by Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama, scheduled to be released on 2 September 2022 by the independent record label Dirty Hit.[1] The lead single from the album, entitled "This Hell", was released on 18 May 2022.[2] The album, recorded between 2021 and 2022, features production from collaborators including Paul Epworth, Clarence Clarity, Stuart Price and Marcus Andersson. Clarence Clarity also produced much of Sawayama's debut album Sawayama (2020).[3]

Composition

In an article announcing the album's release, Variety described Hold the Girl as "an evolution in [Sawayama's] style that will meld influences from across the pop spectrum".[3] Talking about the album's inspiration, Sawayama stated that the album has been influenced by Kelly Clarkson, the Corrs, Paramore, Sugababes,[4] and Taylor Swift's Folklore.[5]

Songs

The second track "Hold the Girl" "opens like a holy gesture to Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' and becomes an emotional dancefloor filler", featuring Sawayama singing with '00s R&B vocals.[6] The third track and lead single "This Hell", a country pop song with "glam rock riffs",[7] inspired by the work of Shania Twain,[8] was written as a response to "human rights that are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs", particularly the rights of the LGBT community;[9] the lyrics contain references to several gay icons,[7] namely Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Princess Diana, and criticise the paparazzi's "cruelty" towards them.[10] The fourth track and second single "Catch Me in the Air" is a celebration of Sawayama's relationship with her mother, written like a "Corrs song as if pitched to Gwen Stefani".[6]

The ninth track "Frankenstein" is a "tense and tetchy indie track (imagine Girls Aloud covering Franz Ferdinand or Maxïmo Park) featuring the singer begging someone to therapise her, to 'put me together, make me better'."[6]

Promotion

Prior to the lead single announcement, Sawayama began hinting at the beginning of a new era on 11 May 2022 with pamphlets and social media messages being posted reading "RINA IS GOING TO HELL".[11] Furthermore, she announced a tour for the second half of 2022.[3]

Singles

"This Hell" was released as the lead single from Hold the Girl on 18 May 2022.[9] Sawayama performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 19 May[2] and on 29 May at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend on the Future Sounds Stage.[12]

"Catch Me in the Air" was released as the second single from the album on 27 June 2022, written about her relationship with her mom as a single mother.[13][14] Sawayama had previously performed the song on her Dynasty Tour.[15]

Release

Before its official announcement, the then-unnamed second Rina Sawayama studio album appeared on Stereogum's December 2021 list of "the 101 Most Anticipated Albums of 2022" at number 56,[16] and on DIY's January 2022 list of "the 22 Most Anticipated New Albums of 2022".[17] After Sawayama revealed the title and release date, Hold the Girl was named in May 2022 as one of Vulture's "36 Albums We Can't Wait to Hear This Summer".[18]
