Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother Australia 2012 is the upcoming ninth season of the Australian reality television series, Big Brother Australia. It will be the first to air on the Nine Network after it signed a deal with Southern Star Group in September 2011.[1] The 2012 series will introduce Sonia Kruger as the new host of Big Brother and will also see the return of Mike Goldman, who is reprising his role on the show, which [2] will again be based at Dreamworld. The series is set to air on 13 August 2012, after a live Launch show at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast on August 12, 2012.

Production

After four years off air, the Nine Network confirmed on 9 September 2011 that they had signed a contract with Southern Star Group to air the series in 2012; the first time a broadcaster other than Network Ten has broadcast the show in Australia.[1]

It is expected that the show will air in 2012, after the network's coverage of the Olympics. The launch will take place on 13 August 2012, with the first show being televised on 13 August 2012 [3][4][5]

In an interview ahead of the series' launch, Kruger suggested that Big Brother will be family friendly and air at 7pm,[6].

Changes to format

Since the show's revival, it has been confirmed that all housemates will have a secret, as revealed on the Official Big Brother Australia Facebook page.[1][4][7] The series is also set to be scaled back with a tighter budget, this has not been officially confirmed by the network and Southern Star.[8] In terms of gameplay, the title suggests that it may take elements out of the French version of Big Brother, Secret Story (France).[1] Although, since then the secret element has been dropped from the title, all housemates do indeed hold a secret which other housemates will have to guess. Previous series of Big Brother were aired when social media was emerging, the ubiquitous use of social media is expected to impact on series nine [9]

Pre-season

Several days after the news Big Brother was to return, Southern Star Group announced on their casting website that they would be accepting pre-audition applications for people who are interested in participating on the season.[10] The official Facebook page for the show, as directed to by the Southern Star website, was opened on 15 September 2011.[11]

In September 2011, when the location of the Big Brother compound had not yet been officially confirmed, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh stated that she would do everything possible to see the show return to the Gold Coast.[12] A spokesperson from Dreamworld, the original home of Big Brother, stated on 21 September 2011 that nothing was locked in but the theme park would welcome the return of the show.[13] In December 2011, The Daily Telegraph reported that Fox Studios Australia and Warner Bros. Movie World had also expressed interest.[14][15] On 22 February 2012, it was officially announced that Big Brother would return to Dreamworld in 2012.[16]

Auditions were announced on 15 March, and took place in all major capital cities, as well as Gold Coast, in April and May 2012. [17] More than twenty thousand people applied to be on the series.[18]

It has been confirmed via the Official Big Brother Australia website that 14 housemates will be entering the house on 12 August after going into lockdown on August 4th,[19] with the television launch show being aired a day later on 13 August 2012.
