Production
The series was announced in April 2014 as part of a partnership between Netflix and Telemundo. The series is written by Chris Brancato and directed by Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha (Elite Squad, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, RoboCop), after directing the 2014 Robocop remake and 2011’s Rio de Janeiro-set crime drama Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.[10] It is based on the true-life story of the growth and spread of cocaine drug cartels across the globe and attendant efforts of law enforcement to meet them head on in brutal, bloody conflict. It centers around the notorious Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) and Steve Murphy (Holbrook), a DEA agent sent to Colombia on a U.S. mission to capture and ultimately kill him.[11] The series was shot on location in Colombia in the second half of 2014.[10]

Reception
Online movie database and score aggregator IMDb scores the series 9.1/10 based on over 25,000 user reviews.[12] Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a rating of 76%, based on 42 reviews, with an average rating of 6.6/10. One reviewer criticised the "awful, misguided" decision to tell the story from a "bland gringo" DEA agent's perspective; others hoped that viewers would read up on the true story, which "surpasses fiction". The website's consensus reads, "Narcos lacks sympathetic characters, but pulls in the viewer with solid acting and a story that's fast-paced enough to distract from its familiar outline."[13][14] On Metacritic, it holds a score of 77 out of 100, based on 19 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[15] IGN reviewer Cliff Wheatley gave the first season a 7.8 out of 10 'Good' rating, saying "If you're still pining for a crime show to replace the void of Breaking Bad or Southland, you could do worse than Narcos. It's a true-to-life account, sometimes to a fault, of the rise of Pablo Escobar and the hunt that brought him down laced with stellar performances and tension-filled stand-offs. It's blend of archival footage reminds us that the horrors depicted really happened, but also manage to present an Escobar that is indefensible but frighteningly sympathetic."[16]
