1,000 Airplanes on the Roof is a 1988 theatrical piece conceived by American playwright David Henry Hwang, composer Philip Glass, and designer Jerome Sirlin. In the classic sense of the word melodrama, an actor performs a monologue over music. In addition, in this production, the character of M performs in the midst of a third dimensional and holographic set.

It had its premiere at the Vienna International Airport, Hangar No. 3 on July 5, 1988. It was directed by Glass, with Patrick McConnell in the role of M. Its music was recorded on Virgin Records with vocals by Linda Ronstadt.

The text and images of the set are published in the book 1,001 Airplanes on the Roof by Peregrine Smith books.
