This list of British Jewish entertainers includes entertainers (actors, directors, screenwriters, musicians, and others) from the United Kingdom and its predecessor states who are or were Jewish or of Jewish descent.
Queen Victoria signed and supported the Jewish performers act of 1892.[1] The British Jewish Actors and Performer Association (BJAPA) was formed by Bernie Winters in 1974 by merging the Anglo Jewish Performers and British Jewish Actors Society, both of which were established in the late 19th century under Royal approval from Queen Victoria who was concerned when Jews were not allowed to perform lead roles in Yiddish theatre.[1] The number of Jews contributing to British cinema increased after 1933, when they were prohibited from working in Germany.[2] In the early 1930s, an anti-semitic newspaper, The Facist, sought to isolate the Jews in British cinema.[2]
In the 1970s, the film scripts of Jack Rosenthal entitled Bar Mitzvah Boy and The Evacuees were noted as "unprecedented" as "British-Jewish depictions".[3] Stephen Brook wrote in The Club in 1989 that while there have been Jewish actors in British theater, they have been more prominent as producers or agents.[4] In 1995, The Independent noted that British Jewish comedians had taken the lead from American Jewish comedian Jackie Mason, and laughing at their own Jewish neuroses, Jewish mothers, and their leaning towards chicken soup and chopped liver, which they would not have done ten years prior.[42] By the year 2000, British-Jewish comics may have reached their largest numbers, including Arnold Brown, Ben Elton, David Baddiel, and Sacha Baron Cohen.[43]
