Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *boj (Benedict, 1972; Schuessler, 2007).

Cognate with Burmese ဗွေ (bwe, whorl; cowlick), Jingpho [script needed] (boi, to have a cowlick); Tibetan བལ། (bal, wool) is related either to this or 綿 (OC -) ~ (OC *men, “cotton”).
