Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *sŋreːnʔ) : abbreviated phonetic (OC *ŋrans) + semantic (to be born).

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *srjal (to breed; to bring up), whence Tibetan སྲེལ (srel, to bring up; to rear).

Schuessler (2007) notes that this word is equally likely to have been Austroasiatic in origin. Compare Khmer សំរាល (sɑmraal, to give birth).
