Etymology

[edit]

The word was transliterated into Armenian following Western Armenian pronunciation of the letter ճ (č), which is [dʒ]. The same happened in Ճապոնիա (Čaponia), Ճամայկա (Čamayka), Ճենովա (Čenova), ճիզվիտ (čizvit). The Eastern Armenian pronunciation is a spelling pronunciation.
