Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic мѣсѧць (měsęcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *měsęcь, from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]ме́сяц • (mésjac) m inan (genitive ме́сяца, nominative plural ме́сяцы, genitive plural ме́сяцев, relational adjective ме́сячный, diminutive месяцо́к)
- month
- в ме́сяц ― v mésjac ― per month
- (archaic) moon (the Earth's only permanent natural satellite, including a full moon)
- Synonym: луна́ (luná)
- moon (in modern Russian usually referring to a crescent or a gibbous moon, but not a full moon)
- молодо́й ме́сяц ― molodój mésjac ― new moon
Usage notes
[edit]Stress shift to the ending is standard in по месяца́м (po mesjacám) and месяца́ми (mesjacámi, “for months”), but this has led to occasional non-standard use of the full stress pattern with final stress in all plural forms and an -а ending in the nominative/accusative plural (see го́род (górod)).
