[edit]From Ottoman Turkish اوبك (öbek), from an earlier *höbek. Nişanyan compares to oba (“clan”) and Mongolian [script needed] (öbči, “whole, all”),[1][2] from Proto-Mongolic *(h)öb- (“complete, whole”).
