English

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Arising from yellow being the main color symbolizing the Telugu Desam Party; possibly also a play on the term yellow journalism.

Noun

[edit]

yellow media (uncountable)

  1. (South India, derogatory) media that is biased towards the Telugu Desam Party, particularly towards party leader Chandrababu Naidu.
    • 2014 October 30, “Jagan Targeted by Yellow media: YSRCP”, in The Hans India[1]:
While taking to the media in the Party central office said that these types of cheap tricks are played by the yellow media to avoid the peoples’ attention on Chandrababu’s failed pre-election promises.
    • 2019 October 18, Gali Nagaraja, “In Jagan's Andhra Pradesh, Media and Journalists In Line of Fire”, in The Wire[2]:
What lends credence to these allegations is the statements Jagan made during his swearing-in on May 30. He branded outlets such as Eenadu/ETV and Andhra Jyothy/ABN TV as “yellow media” (the colour of the opposition Telugu Desam Party). The chief minister said that his government will proceed against these newspapers and TV channels.

Usage notes

[edit]

This term is mainly used by former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy (a member of the Indian National Congress), his son and current CM Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy (who now heads the splinter YSR Congress Party), and their supporters.
