From Middle High German vertrūwen, vertriuwen, from Old High German firtrūwēn, firtrūēn.[1] Compare Alemannic German vertraue, Dutch vertrouwen, Low German vertruggen (Paderbornisch). By surface analysis, ver- +‎ trauen.
