From an unattested *umë, from Proto-Albanian *wamā, from Proto-Indo-European *wemh₁- (to vomit). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐμέω (eméō, to spit out), Latin vomō (to vomit), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬨 (vam, to spit), Sanskrit वमिति (vámiti, to vomit).
