kiisseli
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Russian кисе́ль (kisélʹ), from Old East Slavic кысель (kyselĭ), кисель (kiselĭ), from Proto-Slavic *kyselь m, from *kyselъ (adj.), from *kys- + *-elъ.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]kiisseli
Usage notes
[edit]- In its "pure" form kiisseli is a slightly stretchy dessert made of fruit or berry juice and a starchy thickener. If it is made with milk, it may be called maitokiisseli and when one adds eggs to the picture, one usually gets a vanukas (“custard, pudding”). However, there's major inconsistency in naming practices and another rule of thumb is that the more solid varieties in this continuum tend to be called vanukas, and the more liquid the appearance is, the more likely the dish is called kiisseli.
