[edit]From older Dutch Calcoensche haan (modern kalkoense haan), from Calcoen, the then-used name for the Indian city Calicut, modern Kozhikode. Although the bird originated in the Americas, confusion arose due to its similarity to the African guinea fowl, which was exported to and imported from India since the 15th century by Portuguese traders.
