heutzutage

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Univerbation of heute +‎ zu +‎ Tage.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhɔʏ̯.tsuˌtaːɡə/
  • Audio (Austria):(file)
  • Audio:(file)

Adverb

[edit]

heutzutage

  1. nowadays, these days (in the present era; in the world as it is today)

Usage notes

[edit]

Unlike English "nowadays" or "these days", German heutzutage does not also carry the sense of "recently"/"lately", i.e. it is not used to describe recent developments or recently adopted habits as in: "He's grumpy these days." For that sense, use in letzter Zeit or a construct of that sort.
