[edit]Probably from Vulgar Latin *exmagāre (“deprive of power or strength”), from ex- + *magare (“to enable; empower”), from Frankish *magan, *mugan (“to be able”), from Proto-Germanic *maganą.
Compare Old Occitan esmaiar, Portuguese esmagar, Spanish amagar.
