Etymology

[edit]

Often related to Ungaar, Hungaar (equivalent to modern Hongaar), meaning "Hungarian", but recent etymologists have cast doubt upon this etymology. A connection to Middle Dutch onghehier (monstrosity; monstrous) (modern onguur) has been proposed.
