Ultimately from Sanskrit व्यय (vyaya, spending).[1] A borrowing from Malay biaya (expense; charge) is also considered, given trade between the Hindu Srivijaya Empire and the pre-colonial Philippines. Compare Javanese ꦧꦶꦪꦪ (biyaya).
