[edit]From Middle High German begegenen, begagenen, from Old High German bigaganen, with prefix from Proto-West Germanic *gaginijan, from Proto-Germanic *gaginjaną; equivalent to be- + gegnen (“encounter”) + -en. Cognate with Dutch bejegenen.
