From Ottoman Turkish آقمق, from Proto-Turkic *ak-, *iak- (to flow). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ak-). Cognate with Azerbaijani axmaq, Crimean Tatar aqmaq, Uzbek oqmoq, Uyghur ئاقماق (aqmaq), Khorezmian Turkic اقماق, Kumyk акъмакъ (aqmaq), Turkmen akymak, Bashkir ағыу (ağıw), Kazakh ағу (ağu), Kyrgyz агуу (aguu), Southern Altai агар (agar), Shor ағарға, Khalaj aqqar.
