[edit]From Mendeleev + -ium; named after the scientist Dmitri Mendeleev, creator of the periodic table. The same name was proposed, but rejected, for the earlier-discovered elements berkelium and erbium.

Derived from Mendeleev + -ium (chemical element suffix).
