    • 2009, “Mr. Chen Hung-po”, in The 1958 Quemoy Crisis: An Oral History[1], Ministry of National Defense, ROC, →ISBN, →OCLC, pages 87, 94:
Our defense area was in the main island of Kinmen, and after a short period of stationing, we were shifted to Lieyu in October 1957. The troops were stationed there until August 7 in the following year, when we were transferred to defend Erdan Island, which was still called “Er-dan” , rather than “Er-dǎn” the common name today.¹
      1. Dadǎn Island was originally named Dadan Island. After the war, President Chiang Kai-shek dubbed the 9th Division stationed there the "Dadǎn Troop"—"Courageous Troop," for their valiant performance, and renamed the island Dadǎn Island—"Courage Island"—to commemorate their feat. Other islands, such as Erdan Island, Sandan Island, and etc. were not renamed, but also became "Erdǎn Island" and "Sandǎn Island" in the written form.

Jinmen, known historically as Quemoy, has had some success building a tourist industry on the back of its even closer link to the mainland, close enough that Taiwanese defectors were said to have swum from there to the Chinese city of Xiamen. The military is also in the process of handing over to civilian control other islands that are now restricted zones, including small islets named Erdan and Dadan. []
While some in the military are uncomfortable ceding more territory, such as Erdan Island, to tourists, local officials and many military officers in Matsu on the islands have welcomed the development of the resort targeting mainland visitors.
