[edit]In Rhode Island, often said to be from Massachusett Montaup, but there is little to back up this claim. That word has been compared to Montauk, but may not be identical.[1] Alternatively, named after the Puritan virtue of Hope, or from Old Norse hóp (“narrow bay”).[2]
