[edit]Potentially attested as meppele in 1141, attested with certainty as apud mappele in 1298-1304. Etymology unknown. Unlikely to be cognate to English maple, Old Saxon mapulder (“maple tree”). It is uncertain whether the element lo (“light forest”) is present in the toponym. Compare Meppen and Meppen.
